Dental Shadowing Hours: How Many Do You Need?

Hours matter, but exposure matters more
Shadowing hours show that you understand the profession. But committees care about what you saw and learned, not just the total.
General dentistry exposure is especially important because many applicants over-index on specialists without understanding day-to-day comprehensive care.
What strong shadowing shows
Strong shadowing gives you language for patient communication, treatment planning, practice flow, ethics, and the physical craft of dentistry.
Write down moments as they happen. A single observed conversation can be more useful for essays than twenty generic hours.
Avoid weak descriptions
Do not write only that you observed fillings, crowns, and cleanings. That tells the reader little about your readiness.
Name what surprised you, what responsibility the dentist carried, and how the exposure changed your view of the field.
