How Many Shadowing Hours Do You Need for Dental School?

Hours are evidence, not decoration
Dental shadowing shows that you understand the daily reality of dentistry before asking for a seat in dental school. Schools want to see enough exposure that your motivation is informed.
The exact number varies by school, but weak shadowing becomes a problem when the rest of the application also feels generic.
General dentistry matters
Specialty shadowing can be valuable, but general dentistry gives the broadest view of patient care, practice rhythm, communication, and common procedures.
If all of your hours are in one narrow setting, add variety where possible.
Reflection beats inflation
Do not pad hours or describe shadowing like employment. Strong applications explain what you observed, what surprised you, and how the experience clarified your direction.
A smaller number of thoughtful, varied hours can read stronger than a large number with no reflection.
